Movie Monologues That Are Memorable
Memorable Moments in Movies
Some movies are known for their classic one-liners or quotes such as Wizard of Oz's "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore."(Judith Garkand) or The Godfather 2 "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer”(Michael Carleone). These quotes have remained embedded in our society and still ring in our ears today. I would like to put these quotes to the side as I share with you some monologues from classic movies. Monologues that will hopefully cause you to think, remember, and enjoy these classic movies once again in your minds. What makes these monologues so inspiring is the way they have been delivered and of course by who has delivered them.
Monologues Mentioned and Disclaimer
1. Shawshank Redemption
2. V for Vendetta
3. Inside Man
4. Taken
I will be providing the monologues and then adding my responses and thoughts on them. If you have not watched these movies, the monologues will not make sense. However, I will also be adding the clips from these movies which contain the monologues in them. Hopefully these clips will implant within you the desire to watch these movies, because they are movies you do not want to miss!
Shawshank Redemption
Red "There's not a day goes by I don't feel regret. Not because I'm in here, or because you think I should. I look back on the way I was then, a young, stupid kid who committed that terrible crime. I want to talk to him. I want to try to talk some sense to him, tell him the way things are. But I can't. That kid's long gone and this old man is all that's left. I got to live with that. Rehabilitated? It's just a bullshit word. So you go on and stamp your form, sonny, and stop wasting my time. Because to tell you the truth, I don't give a shit."
Red's View On Rehabilitation
My Response
This monologue is truly inspiring and intellectually sound, and is taken from my favorite movie of all time! It takes place as Red appears before the board to prove to them why the prison should let him go free; to prove that he has successfully rehabilitated. However, if I was giving this monologue, this is what I would of said...
"Ahem...(clears throat) All right gentleman, let me start off by saying that you guys rock my world! If it is not weird to say, I think you guys are a handsome bunch who have all their ducks in a row. I wish I could be just like you, and that can only happen if i get out of this forsaken place. I have been here far too long for a crime I did not even mean to commit! I mean think about it, is it my fault I mowed over that patch of innocent daisies? Is it my fault that the sun beamed straight into my face causing my perfect vision to be blurred? Of course not! It is the sun's fault! Maybe that patch of daisies shouldn't of been there in the first place! Maybe you three prestigious people should wipe the brown off your noses and realize I deserve freedom, and give me that stamp of approval! If you don't you will be sorry, have you ever watched that movie "Law Abiding Citizen" where the main character wreaks havoc on his enemies from inside his cell? Well, that's what i will be doing to you and your families if you don't let me go free. I hope you don't mind your daisies and your roses being obliterated to pieces!"
Disclaimer: This has nothing to do with the movie. No daisies were harmed in the making of this movie. The only thing harmed was a llama who happened to stumble onto the scene. This is a made up speech simply for your enjoyment, as well as will be the ones from now on out.
This monologue is an inspiring look at the term rehabilitation and an insight into the powerful and emotional character Red portrays in this movie. This is just a glimpse into what made this movie popular and why it is still on the top of the charts several years later.
V For Vendetta
V "But on this most auspicious of nights, permit me then, in lieu of the more commonplace sobriquet, to suggest the character of this dramatis persona. Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it’s my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V."
V's Introduction to Evey
My Response
This movie has an excellent cast of actors. To name a few, Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving, and Rupert Graves. Hugo Weaving plays the role of V, who believes the people should not be afraid of the government. Rather, the government should be afraid of the people. The monologue mentioned above is how V introduces himself to Evey(Natalie Portman). All though this monologue is exceptional, I have only one problem with it. V should of used the letter v a few more times. Count them up and see for yourself! Ok, you don't have to count because I took the liberty of doing so myself just to prove my point. There is a depressing amount of only 48 v's in this paragraph. Is V scared of the letter v? Why can't he get past his fear and add some more v's to his monologue. V seems to be validating his vulnerability by using so very few v's. How very vindicating that would be for his vicious vile violence? (Yes, I am well aware that last sentence made no sense) But that is besides the point.
This monologue gives you a in depth look into V and if you have not watched the movie, hopefully a desire to watch it. You will not be disappointed.
Inside Man
Dalton Russel "My name is Dalton Russell. Pay strict attention to what I say because I choose my words carefully and I never repeat myself. I've told you my name: that's the Who. The Where could most readily be described as a prison cell. But there's a vast difference between being stuck in a tiny cell and being in prison. The What is easy: recently I planned and set in motion events to execute the perfect bank robbery. That's also the When. As for the Why: beyond the obvious financial motivation, it's exceedingly simple... because I can. Which leaves us only with the How; and therein, as the Bard would tell us, lies the rub."
Opening Scene
My Response
This is another favorite of mine. I have to make a confession here. I may or may not have listened to this monologue several times. There is just one small change I need to make to this quote to make it one of my most favorite movie monologues.
"My name is John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt. Pay little attention to what I have to say because I choose my words very carefree and I always repeat myself. I've told you my name: that's the Who. The where could most readibly be described as a zoo filled with neanderthals and dinosaurs. But there is a striking similarity between the neanderthals and the dinosaurs, and I can't quite put my hands around it. The What is easy, recently I have devised a plan to turn the dinosaurs into flying penguins and the neanderthals into purple elephants. That's also the When. As for the why, beyind the obvious instant gratification of seeing penguins fly into purple elephants, it's exceedingly simple..because I can. Which leaves us with the How, and therein as the Pied Piper would tell us, is how the chicken crossed the road." Like I said one small change to the monologue is all it needed.
This is such an awesome quote and hooks you into the movie. This is the introduction for the movie and grips your attention for what is in store. If you have not seen this movie, watch this video before doing anything else. I am confident it will have your attention. In fact, I think most if not all of the movie is on Youtube.
Taken
Bryan Mills “I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don’t have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.” The voice on the other end pauses, then says, “Good luck.”
"I Will Kill You"
My Response
This is one of the movies that attracted audiences of all ages because of it's main theme. Liam Neeson is out to kill the people who have kidnapped his daughter. The above mentioned monologue is when Liam Neeson comes in contact with his killer and leaves a not so warm and friendly message. However, there is one slight change I would make.
"If you let my daughter go now, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you..."(insert my own version...I will buy you a Mercedes but a few years old, not brand new, I will buy you a house, but with only four floors and five bathrooms. I will offer you a life supply of ice cream and chocolates and even buy you your very own island. I will give a $1,000,000, but only in one large sum. Yeah that is what I will do if I find you! You better be scared! Because I am vicious and mean! On second thought, you can keep my daughter. Thinks of how much that would save on my phone bill? No more buying supplies for school, no more relentless embarrassment of going to the store to buy tampons? A light bulb is going off in my head, not those lame low energy bulbs, but rather the high efficiency ones that seem to keep giving!)
All right, back to being serious, I just can't help myself sometimes. My mind wonders off all the time, it seems like I can't help it. This movie was excellent, in fact small claim to fame with this movie. I have seen the movie Taken four times in four different states in the span of one week. So I guess you could say I like it a little :)
